In today's world one of the most lucrative industries is cosmetics. The field of cosmetology is expanding to perform many different types of services to satisfy customer demands. Sadly, many people place their value on the external perceptions of beauty when what really matters is the beauty of the heart. This Cosmetology program will address both external and internal beauty.

Careers in this Field:
  •  Cosmetologist
  •  Manicurist
  •  Pedicurist
  •  Make-up Artist
  •  Cosmetic Company Rep.
  •  Cosmetology Instructor

This program is designed to be in compliance with the rules regulations and state-mandated curriculum of the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology.

Instruction of 1,250 hours will be designed to meet the curriculum requirements necessary to qualify students to take the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology licensing examination.

Together with appropriate theory and hands-on training of all the basic salon services offered in Level 1 and Level 2 curriculum, cosmetology students will also be given opportunity in their 3rd Level of training to participate in classroom clinics open to the public.  These clinical experiences will provide the opportunity to enhance skills as well as prepare the student to service real customers.

Potential Instructor:  Looking for a State Board Certified Instructor to begin the Cosmetology Program.

Assistant Instructor:  DOREEN A. STRAYER

Upon graduation from Cumberland-Perry Area Vocational Technical School, Doreen passed the Cosmetology State Board Exam to earn her Cosmetologist license.  She has been working in the Cosmetology field for 28 years.  Several years ago Doreen returned to Cumberland Perry Area Vocational School as an adult student and completed the required hours of instruction and exam to become a State Licensed Cosmetology Instructor.

ACADEMIC INTEGRATION

Most academic subjects are naturally integrated through regular course material. Science is taught with electricity, anatomy/ physiology and Chemistry. Math is essential in mixing and knowing measurements and fractions. Reading is essential to comprehend and follow directions for the products used. Students will ultimately use many of the academic skills, as they will be required to design and describe a Salon that they will create on paper.

BIBLICAL INTEGRATION – CHRISTIAN SERVICE ASSIGNMENT

Students will have opportunity to do Ministry with Cosmetology by going into Nursing and Senior Homes to do whatever services would be permitted and by visiting Battered Women’s Shelters where many of these women feel of little to no value. Our students will be able to provide various free salon services for these women, helping to perk them up and will thereby share the love of Christ through these visits. Cosmetology is about building relationships -- often the stylist becomes the client’s “Family”. Students will be required to journalize these visits and share highlights verbally with their class.
